Atlant Support Center

Yesterday, I interviewed Andrii Omelchenko of Atlant Support Center (Support center Atlant/ Центр Підтримки Атлант on Facebook, https://www.atlantsupport.org.ua/en/) to discuss the psychological consequences of the war in Ukraine, which impacts not only military veterans but also their families and emergency responders to rocket attacks or disasters such as the Kakhovka dam flooding. Those doing the dangerous work to save lives and defend democracy need to be taken care of as well. Atlant Support Center connects veterans with its network of specialized military psychologists to prevent the deeper consequences of PTSD and other psychological effects of the war in Ukraine.

For this interview, special thanks goes to Faith Koh, a student volunteer from the KCL Pro Bono Society Human Rights Project, who prepared the interview questions. Additionally, many thanks to Anna Lobach who introduced me to Andrii, the founder of Atlant Support Center. Lastly, thank you to Svetlana Kotenko, who was the first person I interviewed for Everything Will Be Ukraine / Все буде Україна last year, as she connected me with Anna. Everything Will Be Ukraine emphasizes connections and relationships to help Ukraine get the support it needs to defend itself and democracy worldwide, so this interview was a perfect example of bringing people together to support important causes.

This interview was also personal for me as Andrii contacted me on May 31 asking about scheduling the interview. It was only two hours earlier I had learned my brother Raj Islam passed away. A long-time first responder and specialist in disaster response, and also a strong mental health advocate for first responders and veterans, my brother understood that the hard workers should get the care they need. In supporting Atlant Support Center via Everything Will Be Ukraine and also causes Rajeeb supported such as Flanders Fields and The Code Green Campaign, I hope to bring more attention to these matters which, if unaddressed, can completely devastate the lives of those who save lives. In the comments I am including a screenshot from a campaign shared by my brother about Flanders Fields to help veterans. I did not realize it would be one of our last interactions, if indirect.

For more details about how to donate to Atlant Support Center, please read the comment to this post, which contains IBAN/SWIFT details for international bank transfers. If you encounter any difficulties in sending money and you would really like to contribute to Atlant Support Center, keep in touch with me as I am in direct contact with its founder, Andrii Omelchenko.

Orest Zub

It was a pleasure meeting and interviewing Orest Zub today for Everything Will Be Ukraine / Все буде Україна. We discussed the reporting he does from the ground in numerous hot zones across Ukraine. We also spoke about action steps individuals can take to help the country stand strong, including voting for public officials who support Ukraine alongside providing financial and other contributions.

I realized I had seen Orest before because we both know Johnny Jen (https://youtu.be/SfZawDzTO3o), whose entrepreneurial approach I found fascinating when I met him in Kyiv back in 2017. During the interview, we discussed ways for individuals both to achieve personal freedom and to deliver impact.

The value of networking and connecting with likeminded individuals cannot be underestimated. Benjamin Grzimek, who supports humanitarian relief for Ukraine, recommended Orest and I connect. Orest, thank you for your time – I look forward to connecting and collaborating further.

Combat Kittens

It was great connecting with the team from Combat Kittens yesterday. Faith Koh and I interviewed Oleksandr Stehostenko and Sergii Boichenko and learned more about the impact of organizations focused on saving lives.

Great stories, great impact, and an organization Everything Will Be Ukraine / Все буде Україна recommends to others to receive support. I am fortunate to have met and worked with Oleksandr in Kyiv at the same company, and I’m glad we were able to collaborate outside of work on an important cause.

Stay tuned for the video and the listing of the organization on our website with donation details. Thanks to the King’s College London Pro Bono Society Human Rights Project for its continued support with dedicated volunteers.

For more information about Combat Kittens and how they provide life saving equipment and supplies for military units and civilians, please visit their website, Instagram, and Telegram.

Ben Grzimek

Volunteering and pro bono activity – anyone can do it, but it’s easier when the path to impact is clear.

I came across a post from Fieldfisher, the law firm where I did my training contract, and I read their ESG Report for 2022.

I was curious about the different causes they have been supporting and came across their case study on supporting Ukrainian refugees. The case study details Benjamin Grzimek‘s activities for Ukraine, including for Voices of Children (https://voices.org.ua/en/), an organization featured on my personal initiative Everything Will Be Ukraine / Все буде Україна‘s website.

I reached out to Ben and let him know about my cooperation with the King’s College London Pro Bono Society and its Human Rights Project. Chloé Rozé-Pagès and I interviewed Ben about the volunteering work he has been doing to help Ukraine and Ukrainians. The video interview will be published in the near future.

I look forward to working with Ben and others to create and share more impact in the future.

Army of Volunteers

The Army of Volunteers is a volunteer NGO that helps victims of the war in Ukraine. I met Darina Kirilko, one of their volunteers, in 2019 through my wife. A vocalist, she has performed in a number of venues and channels:

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=366594595644248

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=427359582155398

I had the opportunity to interview her in more detail to learn about her business, music, and volunteering efforts. In an initial set of videos produced, I discuss with Darina about her staying in Kyiv, her volunteering, and why Ukraine needs your help:

Donation details for the Army of Volunteers can be found in the comments here. Darina has personally assured me that donations will be used only for the purposes of the initiative.

Sich

I interviewed Public Organisation «SICH» Ukraine (Help for migrants, Armed Forces of Ukraine, etc) back in October. Production of the final cut is accelerating thanks to the student volunteers from King’s College London Pro Bono Society helping Everything Will Be Ukraine / Все буде Україна.

Thanks to Vladyslava Ruban for your support in coordinating the segments, I greatly appreciated your and the organizers’ time. When viewers get a chance to see the full video, they’ll see exactly how donations are used to make an impact, and why it’s worth donating. I look forward to publishing the full video soon.

For more information about Sich and how they help military personnel and internally displaced people (IDPs), please visit their website: https://gosich.info/

Kiwi Fitness Club

Refugee shelter organized by Dmytro Bryndza and his co-organizers with Kiwi Fitness Club. Donation details can be found here. Dmytro has done a range of volunteering to help Ukraine, but before this he was the architect of my family’s apartment in Kyiv. I met him in 2019 and was glad he helped to design the home I lived in for a little over two years. Dmytro was also featured in an article published by AIN.UA, a popular Ukrainian online publication.

I interviewed Dmytro on June 18, 2022 and one of the questions and answers from the video is posted below:

Raihan Islam of Everything Will Be Ukraine / Все буде Україна interviews Mykola Shevchenko of Help Ukraine Today, a foundation which supports humanitarian initiatives in Ukraine delivering food and medical supplies for adults and children who had to leave their homes or stay near the combat frontline.
